Day at the Capitol

About

UCF Day at the Capitol is an annual event hosted by UCF SG taking place at the Florida State Capitol, where students advocate and lobby for the future of the university with Florida representatives. The Government Affairs and Policy (GAP) Committee filters through relevant legislation that directly impacts the UCF student body and conducts research to create an advocacy agenda.

A survey is used to gain feedback on what the student body considers a legislative priority, and these priorities are included in our advocacy agenda. The advocacy agenda is voted upon in committee and by the SG Senate and taken to Tallahassee to lobby for these priorities. Some priorities we have seen in the past include Education (Bright Future Scholarships, Graduate School funding, International Students, etc.,) environmental Concerns (Zero-waste, recycling efforts, etc.,) public Welfare (Housing Costs, Mental Health Advocacy, etc.,) Civil Rights (LGBTQ+ rights, Women’s Health Rights, etc.)

This event is open to ALL UCF Students and is free to attend. Applications will open on KnightConnect. After applications close, an interview process will begin to choose who will be in attendance. After those are selected you will be assigned a priority to advocate for. Info Sessions and Mock Meetings will take place to properly prepare and inform attendees on how the event will run. Those chosen to go to the DATC event will be granted an excuse form.

The event will take place in the Spring semester. Students will travel to Tallahassee by bus in the early morning, attend tours of the courthouse, attend live committee and senate meetings, attend scheduled meetings with State Representatives, break for provided lunch, and attend a reception to network and connect with members of the Florida Legislation, and take the bus back to UCF.

To get involved, please reach out to the GAC.
